On the departure of Song Jae-rim: the November 12 event

The Song Jae-rim November 12 event
indicates that Korean society should
lower many expectations and standards

On November 12, 2024, in South Korea, the government confirmed that Song Jae-rim left this universe. At age 39, such an early death would be a bit suspicious in a developed country. With the addition of "no signs of foul play," you can guess the best what really happened to Jae-rim. As Jae-rim was a famous person, expect millions of billions of people around the world to cry upon perceiving a sense of loss. In a similar incident, in Argentina, a certain Liam Payne left this universe; again, no signs of foul play. There is a common operation behind the departures of these famous people: suicide. Seeing no hope of a more relaxed future, many South Korean artists left this universe via suicide, including Sulli and Moonbin.

Rigid expectations, active rejection of imperfections, and viewing life as a competition—dancing together—contribute to South Korea having some of the world's highest suicide rates. As Koreans strive for perfection at all costs, any imperfection is considered game over. In schools, there is bullying that highlights the victim's appearance. In the case of the elderly, suicide is about reducing the financial burden on their working children. As for Jae-rim's departure via the suicide operation, South Korean artists face tremendous and vengeful pressure and there is no way they can reduce the pressure. The training of South Korean artists is equated with a factory's assembly chain. The training of the artists is practically inhumane in the way that it prioritizes appearances and neglects nutrition. When the artists complete their training, their managing talent agencies disrespect their privacy and deny several other freedoms. The talent agencies micromanage every aspect of their artists' lives, including relationships.

South Korea is an Asian country. In Asian cultures, before European contact, suicide was seen as a responsible method of dealing with grave burdens or dishonor. In Japan, soldiers called samurai were asked to apply the suicide operation by stabbing their stomachs open to restore the sense of honor. I repeat: the keyword is honor. This method of suicide is called seppuku, which means "stomach-cutting." Confucianism, the native philosophy of East Asian countries, allows suicide for certain events deemed as worse than material death. Confucianism also allows what is called altruistic suicide, where the subject ends their life specifically to benefit other people. While there is a degree of Asian cultural basis for suicide in South Korea, modern suicide is mostly a product of tremendous pain. The suicide subject wants the pain to go away but sees no other methods to remove it. This form of suicide has been referred to as egoistic suicide. Most suicides are about removing painful elements.
