Thailand's Fearless Cop – documentary review

This documentary by Al Jazeera describes the challenges of cleaning up defense and law enforcement, especially amidst moral depravity among the higher-ups and the more powerful. Here, Paween Pongsirin, a renowned former police officer, is strongly determined to enforce the law, even if it risks his freedom. It is disturbing that in Thailand, many so-called military and police officers promote crimes instead of delivering justice. As Pongsirin performed his duty, disturbing results came up. Many high-ranking officials started hating Pongsirin, which escalated into grave threats. The insurmountable circumstances had Pongsirin forced to seek asylum in Australia, working for a mattress manufacturer. When the higher-ups own expensive things, they say that those things are borrowed to avoid being imprisoned for corruption.

The criminals disguised as military or police officers have to be grateful that they are high-ranking officials in Thailand, where hierarchy is strictly observed and challenging the higher-ups is taboo. The higher-ups ordered Pongsirin to stop his pursuit of justice because those higher-ups were very much involved in the felonies. When such an incident was to happen in the Philippines, the errant officials would be shamed by the representatives and senators. In the Philippines, the Senate is known to roast alleged lawbreakers in its hearings.

Lessons from Paween Pongsirin's investigations

The higher-ups, especially those in government, need to ensure cleanliness in their backgrounds. As privacy and secrecy are not valid defenses, they should clean up their closets, remove dirty secrets, and be committed to moral propriety in their lives.
